duck well, all good! The deadly seriousness season review
A successful sports year comes to an end, Italy won the World Champion, Paolo Bettini is cycling champions, Ferrari is not able to Formula 1 World Champion, and also Valentino Rossi's was not able . But others have taken the coal from the fire. Started
has my most successful season with the Tour de Berne, I find Paris-Roubaix winner Fabian Cancellara could dissociate by 22 places. This was followed by a fifth place in Breisach, a tenth place in the individual time trial in Gerlafingen. With these successes I was able to increase my career prize money to an incredible 55 euros. With the active support of Matthew, Sebastian and Thomas then also a sixth place in the team time trial in Sulz in Fricktal was inside. And all before the radmarathon season had even begun.
my marathon debut this year I was then on the side of Matt at the GP Schwarzwald in Triberg. This already became apparent that we would make an almost perfectly balanced duo. In the end it was enough for top-5 rankings for both of us.
stood after a training-intensive month of June then (in addition to the festivities in grand style for a world title came to Italian football team), the two most important months of the year in cycling. After me some over-zealous English scribblers my Tour de France as thoroughly as groundless (? Where is the fraud when making all the same) messed up, had I had to just focus on my own goals, were the names as La Marmotte, Arber Radmarathon , Alpenbrevet and Ötztal Cycling Marathon. Thanks to Floyd Landis, I knew then, fortunately, as I was preparing for my goals: hard on the mountain and the glass is strongly the keyword!
stood at a grand weather then first La Marmotte accompanied by Ingo on the program. This classic in the French Alps, all must offer what an Alpine Marathon: renowned passes, magnificent scenery and a mountain top finish, which can be described simply just as legendary. At 6:57 the clock stayed in Alpe d'Huez, are # 71 in a nearly 7,000 drivers of strong competition and the best German in an Italy shirt.
Next, then the Arber cycling marathon. The field is less important and less international, but nevertheless a real bike race down the front. According to exemplary support of Matt and Ingo in the I could complete the initial phase: a top 10 place at one of the heaviest German bike marathons.
The weather is the Alpenbrevet then from his winter side. Thanks to Snow Susten Nufenenpaß and the route is changed. Snow's still doing the Gotthard, which I did not stop everything and give evidence to 7th place once a top 10 place.
The Ötztal is finally the whole crew at the start: Matthias, Sebastian, Jan and Ingo. Here I can to the middle of the race to compete with the very best before I have to then pay the Jaufenpaß but my hell ride a little tribute. However, on Timmelsjoch I can recover some places, so that I finally in the 80th 8:05 Space can occupy. As a say again what the mercy of the late birth 25 years ago I would have distanced this time the former winner of almost incredible 1:40!
After the battery was pretty empty then, and I can end my season slowly. Since mid-October now in the preparation for the 2007 season. My race starts at short distance (less than 150km) I will be kept to a minimum, and I will not run three marathons within four weeks. I will try my start pick out specifically. Only La Marmotte and the Ötztal are set. One of my dreams is to have all five "monuments of cycling in the framework of marathons to complete. The "Ronde" 2007 could represent the beginning of the realization of this dream. Another ambitious goal "Styrkeprøven" is also known as the Trondheim-Oslo. Let's see what can be implemented like this next year.
In this sense, hard on the mountain and strong on the glass! Here's to Matt, Sebastian, Ingo, Thomas and everybody else.
A special thanks goes also to my father who called me (and others) for some events immortalized in digital form, and may have to sweeten the eyes of animals among us to read many a report.
See you in 2007!

Cost Of Building A Decent Tower
A Miracle in the Ötztal
After my experiences last year when Ötztal Radmarathon was clear: here I must be there again. Matt did not take long to be persuaded to participate, Ingo was also the idea of the "Iceman" to drive to inspire quickly, but when Sebastian was a bit more persuasion necessary. The first hurdle for a response when Örme is the declaration: 4000 places will be awarded when the online registration is enabled, it is known, however, in advance not, in February 2006, the terse notice on the official website. To get us to sign all four, we shared all relevant data so that each could take the four of us to sign up for herself and others. The All worked so well that Ingo and I signed up almost simultaneously, so that we could return four starting places at once. During a training trip, we managed jointly also convince Jan, apply to it in the draw of returned starting places. Lo and behold, he won the lottery or a starting place. With five riders then there was the possibility as a team to be counted in the team standings.
now took on the project "Iceman" to more specific features: to the many winter miles, then added a few more kilometers, many many meters and some "preparation" marathons, which, however, Sebastian and John of various reasons, refused consistently
;-) I was even beginning of the season once expressed a dream of 8:30 , after my performance of the year (especially my performance at La Marmotte) I did not trust me even a time ranging from 8:00 am to to 8:15. But La Marmotte was in early July and my form, especially in the last few weeks (at least subjectively) does not become better, or less realistic to me appeared to 8:15 plus-minus 5 minutes. "Officially," but I was off again 8:30 as a goal.
The journey took place in a club based on the VW bus. Good things and reasonably good weather, we made five of us on Saturday morning in the road towards Sölden Ötztal. At the station rose to Ötztal then also Matthias' friend Andrea, who was kind enough to take over the catering for us on the burner. Once in Soelden, we got first place, the key to our apartment into a real luxury hotel and found out on this occasion, we invited as participants of the marathons were our Sunday breakfast to take at this hotel with us, also we had the sauna open for use . THAT is even a service. And, no, I tell not now, which apartment we had, everyone else next year booked there ;-) The rest of the day passed quickly, a short practice round, around the legs to loosen up a bit and go to our home-made jerseys walk a bit (are real club jerseys there despite a lead of nearly a year for us, unfortunately, still do not), then the usual pasta dinner and then went to bed soon.
The night before, but then it starts to rain. My worst forebodings seem true to be: it would be the same as last year? Saturday dry and nice to evening and then steady rain through Sunday lunch? Shall be deemed the first glance, had rung the alarm after about 4 am, the weather: low clouds, but dry roads. Hopefully it holds up to the start. After that it may rain quietly drive off only Siffwetter already is not fun. After a luxurious breakfast (see above) take advantage of the other four so prior to twenty six already on the way into the starting lineup, and I may even start this year thanks to my last year of the first starting block. Since Andrea is also the direction of torch on its way, I'm all alone in the apartment and for some unknown Reasons hyper nervous suddenly.
important in the apartment and down like a nervous racehorse must not force me to go and right into the starting lineup. To short after six clock I think it is completely no longer, and also leave the apartment to roll towards launch. When I was standing against six ten point to the start, the first starting block is already filled but very good. I talk briefly with two riders from Team Strassacker, standing next to me, it's about 6.30am point even going on. From the first group I had heard a lot of good, especially after the first exit Ötz unstress be with this group than in the back in the peloton. But puff pastry: a stupid Rumgestecke, brake to almost standstill, again Fall in the pulse is already beyond what I had actually set as a limit for the Kühtaianstieg. I decide to let the pulse of today can be pulse and easy to drive. What else remains for me too! So keep trying for a few positions in the large area make up, earlier, it is usually quiet. And whoever has next to me the same suggestion? The blue and orange clothes and blue Storck with the Lightweights I did know: my friend from Herpersdorf Arber. Quick exchanged a few words, he is drawn even further. Before me appears on a driver in Australia-shirt: this can not only be the K. Roo from the tour forum, and the fact he is. With him I change a few words. Meanwhile, I'm a little further forward, and it will actually run more quietly.
Overall, the pace, however, rather moderate, after 42min we turn into the Kühtaianstieg, much slower I was last year when I had to start back, either. So, tuck in the jersey rain jacket, open vest, gloves off and away went the dance. A quick look at the heart rate monitor: now 175-180. That'll be fun. But anyway, here is the bike race and so I drive it. A new feeling arises in to me: the sense of Rebuilt becoming the mountain. So far I have had in all my Alpine marathon rather back started so that I could clearly pass more people than people overtook me. Now that was at once different: I have a lot of drivers can be drawn, as I hardly even overtaking driver. Not a good feeling. Nevertheless, I get a traveling woman to my left with a characteristic rocking everywhere: that can not only be Anna Corona, last year's winner. It is actually so bad I can not be on the road, after all she went last year 8:12. After a few kilometers, the field has, however, reasonably sorted, I have found my (too fast?) Rhythm, operated such a little Group hopping, but I have a feeling of being only slightly faster than last year, albeit at a significantly higher heart rate. I go to a small group of about five riders, including three Austrians in the same shirt, quite obvious they belong to the same team. Here I hang my first time in a while. It goes through the serpentines. The road is wet, it always trickles a bit. The following flat section we solve the four of us up, before us lies a large group, we want to obtain. On the steepest part of the hole I drive to this group completely: Pulse 195, the acid in the legs. Ok, now for the first time recreation. I try the pulse at least to push back a bit, but somehow my rhythm is such that the pulse does not really go down. Regardless, next year I'll go without the stupid thing by heart rate monitor. That's just so crazy. In the group, Monica Bandini, with their Gregari, also a candidate for the women's competition. Moreover, even in this group: the Herpersdorf with the Lightweights. On a somewhat obliquely retracted cattle grid I get to roll and lie almost flat on its face. After this scare comes back from the front driver's blond with blue helmet and blue and white jersey: Christian Ceralli, the Vorjahresieger. So now I had already surpassed both last year's winner. Somehow not a very bad feeling. About a mile south of the pass I detach myself from this group, actually rather unintentionally, I'm going just keep my footsteps. Via a temporary road is gravel, the last meter goes up to the first pass of the day, the Kühtaisattel. After 1h 46min
journey so far, I am on the pass, so it was not as slow as it had partially felt. I grab me in passing a cup of hot tea to make my wind jacket and decide for departure to dispense with gloves and windbreaker. The road is still wet, but this is less problematic in this exit, as it almost always goes straight ahead. Top is in the gallery for the first time the nine forward at the speed display. Hopefully none of the (slower) riders in front of me now make a stupid Schlenker. In the steep section to reach "unfortunately" 98km / h, I would have cracked so much to the 100km / h! Further down, where it is getting a bit flat, a group formed initially around ten riders, including Tour toboxx from the forum. Rapidly growing group on the way to Innsbruck, around 100 or more riders.
I am looking for a place in the middle of the group; mitrollen simply and eat as much as possible here's the plan now for the following increase to the burner. That with the "Mitrollen" proves to be very soon dream: It will hit a breakneck speed, to "rest" or even "recreation" is not the question. The few moments where the pace is fairly tolerable, I use to me peu à peu reinzuwürgen two Powerbarriegel. At some point a nearly flat track is reached, but rather slow pace, it is even faster: 45-50km / h, the speedometer, almost the whole group moves one row, I'm even in the shadow sometimes difficult at the terminal. Steinach it is finally time we have achieved through our hell of a ride with the top group all favorites (including professional Gerrit Glomser). I hope now quieter pace that I begrudge the field for a short term, but after a few miles will go on the hunt anew. Of recovery can be no question, the pulse is in the same regions as the Kühtai. Ok, I think to myself, you wanted to cycle race, here's cycling race. What should we do it? Can tear off and wait for the next group? No, first you do not know when will the, and secondly, such a group as they make up a huge opportunity insane amount of time, even if there is a risk that you übereißt this total. And so it is also the tenor around me "? Are the insane over there later this we get the receipt, the revenge!" I would have been the receipt for the last 3km to the Brenner Pass: leg cramps! When I was out of the saddle go to the somewhat steeper final kilometer to address, I go almost simultaneously to the left and right calf. I could scream with pain. I quickly lose a few positions, but somehow it is still more or less afloat. After about 3 h 35 min the burner is achieved. 10 minutes, then my calculation.
waiting at the burner top Andrea with new water bottles, fast the empty bottles away, wind jacket and gloves also peppered the car, briefly complained of my suffering, so by for leg cramps, and that they should gear the other, that was the end for me, it works even more so. The first group of three, prompting me to ride, driving me. My legs do not obey me yet again really. To the next group of four, I hang myself tuned, however, go with the wind. Appears before us, the large lead group with about 200 drivers, behind it we meander through the (Forbidden) escort vehicles. Here comes something akin to the Tour de France feeling: Suspended drivers are fighting back in the downhill in the wake of the cars into the field ;-) Once in the plane, my cramps are worse again. My legs have a very painful life of its own. Ok, try using rauszudehnen the seizures. Stand up, leg stretch, lower heel, ouch, I shoot a huge cramp in the front thigh. The same game on the other side. Pain pure. I could cry. I still have about 100 km with two passports, including the Timmelsjoch a super heavy increase, which alone is already a the juice from the legs to move. How can this go? Below purely in the Jaufen tears apart the field. I'm trying to find my step. Especially to go as I do in the calves cramp sitting, standing to go to the thighs. Strangely, the pain under stress are more tolerable, even if your legs feel like himself again and again blocks. I still hang in a group, it also Monia Gallucci (the eventual winner) with their supporters, but it's like playing with fire. Any time could go to the legs completely, and I would stand. After five or six miles my pace of the group is a bit too high, meter by meter, I lose. Now come from behind again drivers back to me. I feel like shit. I had enough to drink? Was it a mistake to omit the Kühtailabe? Or simply the pace was too high? After all, the average was up to the burner at around 34km / h. The Jaufen had I last year, both for growth and for departure to my heart threatens to be a fiasco. To make matters worse, it starts to rain yet. Usually does not bother me, but now and here it gave me the rest but I can not just get off and push, or even give up! Somehow more that are around me but a bit faster, but really good to see that also no longer sufficient. Finally I get out of the forest can see the pass. Not looking up, the only depressed. Chance are spectators cheering on the riders. Somehow I can not even need that anyone even "Bravo!" calls out. Nix bravo, crappy isses, and in such a right. At last, the pass is reached, the Labe this year is fortunately very top of the pass. I fill my bottle of iced tea, a mistake. It is an insult such a sticky-sweet stuff on a bike marathon to offer. Quick yet attracted the wind vest, looked at the clock, I wanted to my exact departure time "stop" 5h 06min before.
Despite the cramps I had been driving on Jaufen 1h 06min. Üblerweise the cramps in the downhill worse instead of better, I sit totally stiff on the bike it is nothingness enjoy departure. Because of the cramps I can race to the corners as not so good. Then, you also have a fast fall, which I am already slipped with two wheels, and an evil to waste all that I almost moved into the guard rail, to do so. Still, I can get four or five drivers. After 22min I'm in St. Leonhard. A departure time, which I am under the circumstances, really proud. Down in St. Leonhard I've only once so blue that I not even the timing for the start of the rise Timmelsjoch perceive (if I had not 'ne official from St. Leonhard meantime, I'd still the firm conviction that there was no timing). I eat again, drink from the icky, too sweet iced tea, and I consider the question of how should I climb with my legs this monster of a pass called Timmelsjoch.
After leaving my legs to do just nor hurt are really stiff, I have cramps in places where I did not think that there are muscles. Again the phenomenon: when I try to cramp rauszudehnen, I get elsewhere the next. Once again, I fired a single woman at the roadside, is so lovable meant, but at that moment I could have beat them for the igniter. I am not "Bravo!", "There!" or "You can do it!" felt. Strangely, I never thought of it is to get off your bike and give up, only to give up the idea is pervasive. But who can force me to give up if I am not prepared to do themselves? My legs do not where I'd show's it. A sign announces the beginning of the climb to the mountain standings Timmelsjoch; 19.8 km to the Labe in Schönau. The first few miles are a pain, I do not know how to even connect virtually painless. However, I develop so slowly a certain disregard of the cramps. Hintermoos it is steeper. Here I had last year, my weakness, had to leave for the first time many people on the mountain. Today, it is suddenly the other way: even though I completely bad, I see drivers in front of me again, and they come closer. Including the driver, who had me on abghängt Jaufen very early, such as Stefan Thaler from the VCR from Regensburg or even my old acquaintance with the blue and Storck Lightweights. I had the Jaufen despite the pain somehow instinctively made the right one? Anyway, I have to overtake morality, and I really desperately needed. Towards the end of the steep land behind moss I've approached fought on two drivers, which I had previously overtaken in the Jaufenabfahrt before me in the first kilometers of Timmelsjoch rise again had to stand. Then, finally, the flat section is reached, here I wanted to relax a bit, but the opposite is true: when the load subsides, the cramps worse again. The flat piece is a torture more than once, I do not know how to connect properly yet. And there are still more than 10km of which 8km with a slope that you just can only be described as brutal. At the Labe in Schönau I grab just in driving a water bottle and fill it - also in driving - into my water bottle. After the Labe it will be very soon steep, one part bad because it means agony, on the other hand, are more tolerable to the steep sections of the cramps. With difficulty I screw me up in the company of two other riders up the steep switchbacks. Suddenly, a short cry, and we're just a couple: the third seems to have now also met my fate, convulsions. Whatever, therefore, for two more. I alternate between standing and sitting down. In the convulse always standing up to the thigh, then sitting down to the thighs, the calves do the same. I'm long on the largest sprocket and go only so between 10 and 11km / h. Cycling feels different. The last drinks station is reached, as last year I let myself in passing a cup of cola rich, and as the year before I throw it away after three or four sips again. I can not drink at such a load on the wheel of a cup. Regardless, the cola was always more for the psyche. But it goes anyway, only the head if I think about it, I would be behind it determines that with such legs in general no longer cycling CAN. But stay, in the end even give up? Here, 5km before the pass? No. Never. Still pile up on me three, four or five turns. I do not really look up and do it anyway. Somewhere up there has to be the redeeming tunnel. And indeed, after countless painful kilometers viewers to terminate the tunnel and thus a kind of redemption. After the tunnel it (as usual) is freezing cold on top of that had been blown on the last kilometers, a nasty wind. So vest and into the exit. Pretty much 7h 30min shows the Clock, which would be slightly above 8 h, 8 h was no longer under it.
"Now that you have your dream!" written in large letters at the top of the pass of the Timmelsjoch. For me it was more of a nightmare, before the end of the builders of the Timmelsjochroad however, had built two more downs. Initially it was but first downhill, go really fast is no longer there, the one blowing a stalwart against the wind and the other can be pain in the neck and back (the legs I leave it now left out) do not really aerodynamic position for longer. In the ascent to the toll gate at least I can drive this year with some momentum into it, but here is simply nothing more. Overtake me here alone again three or four riders. But I do not care, I just want this stupid run, which is partly not, survive and to Objective come. After the toll, come again some steep downhill turns, where I had fought last year in the gums around my sub9h time. Although I would say that this year I'm still broken, the legs work in the now following flat piece back halfway. A group of five closes from behind me, I can take even in the group leadership. We pick the drivers who overtook me in the ascent to the tollbooth again. The last short uphill section at Zwieselstein is surprisingly little that dar. And then, after 227km Sölden already achieved. The last 1000m, the last 500m, the last 200m, the final bend, over the bridge and Then it is done. The first view is of the Clock: 8h 05min 23s. Madness.
And today, a day later. Did this Ötztal Bike Marathon was fun? Actually, no. It was suffering from the first minute, and the second half were just more agony. It is a complete mystery on how to cycling with those cramps at all, let alone such passports at such speeds. I look at my times, I'll call the pain of my still aching legs back to mind (as far as that is which), can only shake his head. There is simply no longer now for me to understand what happened there. The legs were really from the burner, not to use the bike, more than once have I been on the wheel are bent on the roadside to see, but some strange force has stopped me to rise from the wheel. I think I'll never really understand what I was there on the wheel.
brief summary of the other results:
toboxx from the tour forum, I've hit the target again: under 8 hours! Giant respect and congratulations!
I also met the target nor K. Roo, mala (both from the tour forum) and my colleagues Herpersdorf: all very much under 9 h, h. partly under 8:30 Also, congratulations to you on a thick, if you read this.
still standing at the finish I heard ! Sebastian ear man from Freiburg "the announcement, a look at the clock: 8:33 h!! I thought I can hardly believe my ears. But he really was. Then he rolled a little later than the start line when I was standing at the end even 8:30 for him to book. Unbelievable. The very first time about 200 km, even when the Iceman and then 8:30 the same hour! A huge accomplishment I sort almost higher than my own.
When Sebastian and I left the target area, came in rapid succession, we meet Jan and Matt on their way to the target: both with 8:56 or 8:58 and just under 9 to under the magical mark. Bold performance!
Ingo came a little later to finish: 9:16 h. Also a super performance!
We had started with five people, have come with five people isn goal, four of Ötzi novices, have undercut one of which in turn three on the first go-9h border. A Super Team Result! The results of the team standings are unfortunately not online yet, but perhaps it has indeed served in top 20 for the team title.
Fabio has achieved his personal goal of a time at 10:30 h, 10:35 and also an improvement of the previous year by about 2 hours (!). Here again a huge congratulations!
As in the previous year, this year again split times taken:
Compared to the previous year, the burner time stopped a little further up. The Timmelsjoch time was this year stopped directly below St.Leonhard. The times are not so directly comparable with previous periods. Compared with the previous year I am up in all sections!
are pictures of the way there (in hopefully obvious reasons), no. Perhaps it is in the coming days to one or the other image, Ingo and Andrea had also made a few pictures.

The Timmelsjoch: for me the most brutal passport, which I know so far (is maybe the fact that it had been operating only when Ötzi, at least the south side)
As in the previous year, this year again split times taken:
route | time | place |
Ötz-Kühtai | 01:04:10 | 80 |
Kühtai-Innsbruck | 00.44.10 | 71 |
Innsbruck-Brenner | 01.06.00 | 40 |
Brenner-Sterzing | 00.25.41 | 259 |
Sterzing-Jaufen | 01.06.19 | 141 |
Jaufen-St. Leonhard | 00.22.12 | 72 |
St. Leonhard-Timmelsjoch | 02.01.30 | 79 |
Timmelsjoch Sölden | 00:35:15 | 188 |
Compared to the previous year, the burner time stopped a little further up. The Timmelsjoch time was this year stopped directly below St.Leonhard. The times are not so directly comparable with previous periods. Compared with the previous year I am up in all sections!
are pictures of the way there (in hopefully obvious reasons), no. Perhaps it is in the coming days to one or the other image, Ingo and Andrea had also made a few pictures.

Medtronic Insulin Pump School
pure chaos
The planning was good: two weeks before the Ötzi a weekend in Andermatt, Saturday the little round (120km with 3500Hm on Susten Grimsel and Furkapaß) at Alpenbrevet under competitive conditions, then on Sunday another one passes round with Furka, St. Gotthard pass Nufenen and, finally, Andermatt from barely three hours by car from Freiburg. Fabio was persuaded quickly, at least as fast as we were notified (very close before the deadline, then we would have the late registration additional 25 Sfr. Cost more, which for a Entry fee of 90 Sfr. not necessarily must be even). After a little searching and a few phone calls was then in arms also found a hotel (Hotel Gerig, I can only recommend), Anderson was at this time is already completely booked out. But it happened as it had no sooner we had booked us to bid farewell to the summer. After about nine weeks, during which the thermometer was barely fallen well below 30 degrees, it seemed as if the fall has already taken hold: Temperatures in the low 20 degree range, to almost daily rain. There were also doubts as to the form for me: the ease of the last few weeks after the Arber Radmarathon suddenly blow, her legs felt be blocked at any particular the head and was tired, so tired of cycling part. On top of that I made since Arber Radmarathon slight knee problems worries. All in all, not good conditions in order to agonize over three Alpine passes beyond the 2000m.
the days immediately before the Alpenbrevet were characterized primarily by daily to check the weather report: a cold front from the north, the snow line in the Alps can be reduced to at least 2,000 m, was less optimistic forecasts even of only 1600m talk! On the other hand, others saw Weather ahead at least for Saturday in Anderson while cold, but still fairly dry weather.
The arrival on Friday was for rain, cool weather and cloud-covered mountains, then only a very limited positive throughout, especially Fabio, the bad weather on the bike more clogged than me, but its start probably figured more like 0% than to 10%. I even tried to convince me that it was yet to "perfect cycling conditions" handle, which brought me to Fabio the title of "denial of reality."
when collecting race numbers on the eve of the temperatures in Andermatt to about 1400m above sea level are more than just two digits, except for short gaps is constant rain precipitation recorded. The decision to leave and already back on Saturday not planned to stay until Sunday died in principle already. After dinner is on Fabio completely "after all the pasta was delicious" mood, as I say still, I'm going into it at least to arms, and in the Susten. After a restless night (the first night I sleep in strange beds rarely good) The first look is after getting the weather: rain, rain, rain, estimated temperature in Wassen (500m deeper than the other Matt): a maximum of 10 degrees, rather less. So slowly ripens in my own case, the decision to dispense with a start. The view of the signs to Sustenpaß augurs poorly: where yesterday's "open" was, now is a white sign with the warning Packed snow to be seen. Just at that moment Fabio ereicht a text of the organizer: Due to snow and Susten Nufenen there is a route change: there is only one route over the Gotthard, Lukmanier and Oberalp for all categories. This route change was connected with the hope that would occur after the Gotthard in Ticino, a weather improvement. Quickly, the decision is per start. After breakfast, we drive the car up to Andermatt. Only 45 minutes from the start. It's raining, and neither of us dares to open the door of the car: cold would receive us, but how cold that wants to at the moment no need to admit really.
In assembling the wheels then the next shock: the front wheel can not inflate. All I try to pump air into the tire is, in another place out again. So I quickly change the tube. Amazingly, I get the coat gives way to the rim, the last time I had struggled for hours with this coat and this rim. Quick inflated. Ah great. The air stays inside. In'll take care of other arrangements: rain jacket, shoe, wrap long gloves, hat under the helmet, bars and gels, etc., around a quarter to eight I want direction Starting Line-up roll, as if struck by another shock: the front wheel is flat again. Ok, that's it, no start for me. But I had not reckoned with Fabio, he gives me spontaneously his front wheel and waived his hand on the launch, with which he is due to the weather before had never really can get used (to my defense, I must add here briefly that the two hoses to different places are broke down, it is therefore not a "consequential loss" is). This further delay, however, leads to the fact that I did not even create a toilet visit, besides, I do not have time to even fill my bottles. Kindly lend me Fabio also its already filled water bottles (Mille Grazie!).
Just before eight, I put myself in the starting lineup, from the original 214 reported starters to the short round may be left around 100 (the starter of the two major rounds are traveling started at seven clock, although they are now traveling the same route are as we should be). At eight clock we go: Although the rain has slowed, but as long as the water is on the road, it is relatively unimportant whether the water comes from above or from below. divided on the approximately three kilometers to the start of the climb to the Gotthard in the field already, as I stood at the start relatively far back, I lose the connection here already to the forefront and keeping track of my position. I join a group of riders in Swiss national team, judging from the wheels, upon the Cross is it driver (this assessment should be confirmed later). Down at the Gotthard I catch even a glimpse of a small guide for cyclists: 9km range with 630Hm be announced me. That sounds to tolerable. Forget it. Although I manage to put me out of my group and to get the driver (including however many MTBler that had started half an hour earlier) but the feeling of the last two weeks is back: his legs work but there is no sense of cycling's there. Everything feels blocked, although the legs do not hurt, I have the feeling now to be full on attack. This is the head is not in the least willing to torture themselves. I fight the tears me up the rise, giving up, the bike-in-the-pitch Botany, the below in more detail than the pass. Before I give my innner eye the Ötztal already lost, doubt whether it even makes sense to start there. In the rain mixed with light snow slowly Grieseln, left and right, the fields are white, sprinkled with powdered sugar.
I ask one of the accompanying riders, whether on the other side (the pass) the weather was better, "not really" is his answer. The fog prevented the pass that I perceive as such, it is simply flat and suddenly the tunnel in front of me. I am completely alone to see before and no one behind me. With a personal escort motorcycle I take the exit to Airolo in attack. After all, it has stopped raining and the road is mostly already dry. A short time later I will cross three of the National Driver obtained. Soon I can see why: Radbeherrschung perfect, in every corner I lose a couple of feet, especially when we are diverted after about half of the descent on the old cobbled street. Finally reached Airolo and the cobblestone behind us. The local food we have left (or right) are located. Continue in the direction Biasca. I have no idea how many miles it is like the road ahead yet. First, there is even steeper something flat down, the four of us we can solve from a regular and organized so before a nice pace. The few drivers who we can get, or do not follow our own pace. Only one attaches to our heels. My guides always come out shorter, but this is not due to the onset of fatigue, but rather the fact that so slowly of missed my toilet starts before the start of revenge. One of my passengers relieved themselves while riding an exercise that I dare not imitate him. Shortly before Biasca we are haunted by a very fast moving 4 or 5 riders strong group (later I learn that it has acted as the very top group, which is on the way up to the Gotthard to the point at which the new and traverse the old road from each other, had).
When we go over Biasca direction Lukmanierpaß , I think just to relieve myself. Another rider in my group is doing the same to me. The rest goes on, of course. At the next board (which we omit again) wait two former driver who now top group on my rider. Obviously aware of either my companion. The four, very soon, however, only three of us take the first ever long and not very steep ascent to the Lukmanier addressed.
After some 20km exit achieved Disentis. Now followed around the 20km long climb to Oberalp that is very flat at first. The wind that had me slowed down in the directions of Lukmanier pushes me now up the rise: in the first flat I drive all the gates on the large sheet, the speed is around 25km / h, sometimes even more. Before me appeared the last driver on the former leaders. Also it may overtake me. Slowly, the increase is steeper, but I must now turn to the small chain ring. reached after about 12km but then the increase alpine slope percentages, so slowly makes itself wide fatigue in the legs.
Unfortunately I have not a clue what the pass is exactly, nor how far it is to pass. So I asked a couple standing on the roadside spectators who, three and a half miles I get the answer. Stupid as I am, I forget at this moment to look at my speedometer, so to me that this information is only a few hundred meters later, no longer bears much. Moreover, there will steep, really steep: for the first time all day I need the 26er gear, the largest that I have on board. But even this steep part is over now. But a nasty cold wind is directly on it from the beginning. Even if the sky is mostly blue, I reckon because of the clouds looming on the horizon, still struggling to dive down to Andermatt again in the rain. After a terribly long last kilometer to reach the pass, to a tightening of the windbreaker I do without, the long sleeve jersey should be enough for the last 10km down to Andermatt. In large, nice to moving sweeping it comes down to Andermatt. My fears about the rain should not be confirmed, on the contrary, the now mostly blue sky releases a fantastic view of Andermatt, Hospental and Realp towards Furkapaß. Alone for this view was worth the day really.
Then Andermatt achieved, it is still short of the town and then across the finish line: after 5h 36min am I in dry, sunny (but cold) weather back where I felt the morning at 5 degrees and rain started was . Fabio shoots a few pictures, bring my bike to the car and bring me my bag (Fabio, you're hired as my personal soigneur!). Following the return of the transponder, is a small plate of pasta is then returned to Freiburg.
a weekend that threatened to fall completely into the water and not otherwise happy just started, had found a conciliatory end.
Conclusion: According to the organizers was the route length of 156.2 km with 3270Hm, my own assessment showed 159km with 3500Hm (although I must admit that my altimeter somewhat "generous" is ;-)).
My 5h 36min ranged for seventh place overall (the list is sorted alphabetically, unfortunately), about 15 minutes behind the winner. Of the 8-Clock-starters, I was as far as I could see this, probably the fastest. However, it is pure speculation as to whether I would have been faster if I would start at 7 clock. Just as I went through the Gotthard, where I had the fastest probably not more likely to follow.
The route change was the weather, technically correct (and probably only possible) decision of the stewards, even if this were beautiful passes of Grimsel Susten and by rather unspectacular (and rather unpleasant to be driven) and passes such Lukmanier Oberalp replaced. I'm glad that was ever driven! For the eyes
animals among us, it will probably be in the coming days a few photos. Fabio has even shot a few pictures that he wants to send me.
EDIT: Pictures added!

The four, very soon, however, only three of us take the first ever long and not very steep ascent to the Lukmanier addressed.
concentration and effort on Lukmanier
Already on the first bit steeper sections shows is that I am the best climbers in our group well. I'll wait, however, in the flat sections, it is simpler than the three of their own. The legs work so slowly feeling better, and the head is also concerned with other things again as the futility of cycling. That we so slow the first and last one hour earlier launched driver is overtaking and additional ethics (I know it is nasty to pull himself up to it, but it's still a good feeling). Olivone behind the increase becomes steeper, and it is warm enough to open the shirt, the rain jacket has long been stored in the jersey, just as the long gloves. Without great speed I set me from my two Swiss guides. Now it runs smoothly again. A short time later appeared before me a jersey with Swiss Cross: this was the first of the National Team member who had me caught up in the descent of the Gotthard. I ask him to ride. We talk a little bit (and I know that my guess is that they cross national driver was correct), on top of that we are both in Freiburg ;-) He just out of the Swiss Fribourg and Fribourg. When it just becomes flatter at Campra, I will sit also upon him. I continue to get hard-working driver, the one hour had started before me. Slowly it is getting colder, I close my jersey again. The other two drivers of the Cross I get about 3-4km in front of the summit, and they follow me for a short time. Finally, the rather cold and windy mountain pass Lucomagno is reached. Light rain has resumed, but there are really only a few drops, enough to not even know that the road is really wet. At the fast food, I fill my bottle and grab me a couple of lying ready gel. Then it goes into the downhill, I think, at least: first it goes into a tunnel where it rises a few meters further, before the road after about 35km again about to rise tends valley. The descent is extremely annoying: not particularly steep, plus head wind, here is work required to at least to reach 45km / h. Fortunately, there is a fellow, after all, so I'm not all downhill in the wind alone.

How Effective Is The Loette Pill
Once Testo cake, please!
Thanks Floyd Landis we know now what it takes to get a terrific performance on the bike to accomplish: Training? Oh, nonsense! Doping? I'm clean! No, two beers and (at least) four whiskey, and you drive the next day as a young god. Since my one for participation in a cycling marathon must get up a little earlier than Mr. Landis for his Tour stage, I left it on the eve of Arber Radmarathon with a beer and a grappa, and I also saved me the day before the mandatory break in which I drove was not that easy. But after a little more of the series. The
Arber Radmarathon in Regensburg is one of the sizes marathons in Germany and offers on the big round 250 km and 3300 Hm lot of problems, even if there are certainly heavier bike marathons, not only in the Alps. But, as you always so nice as trite: it is the drivers that make the race hard and not the route. As a former member VCR me to attend was the "real" Arber Regensburg in my time not, unfortunately, but I was of the internal association Distance on the line is still at least partially known. So I wanted to make up such participation this year in the company of some club members. Finally, Ingo and Matt found as a passenger, the round was completed by Mark and two friends of Mark. Markus, Basti and Hannah wanted to take the 170km round in attack, while for Ingo, Matt and I have had to be the great 250km round.
The eve was spent with pasta and beer (see explanation above ;-)). Ingo, Matt and I ensured astonishment and joy by the chef, in which all three of us even before we finished the second portion of pasta was ordered, so all we wanted then did not rely solely on the Testo-place setting.
(rang my alarm clock at 4:30) After a short night, I meet up with Matt at 5:15 clock and Ingo to ride to the start.
clock at 5:30, we arrive at the start, that's enough to be able to classify themselves pretty well up in the starting lineup. Actually provided for the planning, use the route as a training run under slightly more stringent conditions, but it is never wrong when you start to stand far ahead, you deal with that just the risk of falling out of their way.
is item 6 clock from Regensburg's Mayor of the starting signal, around 1500 Racing cyclists and share in the misty morning in motion. The first 15km are flat, Matthias, Ingo and I are primarily places to make good deals to the front. At least until Arber front ride was the unspoken goal. The first increase is it with the rest a bit over, it will definitely run relatively quickly.
An exceptional view presented to us when we first encounter through the fog and we meet the morning sun shines. Through the fog it is somewhat cooler than in recent weeks, but that does no harm in any way and is very pleasant. After the first small climbs and 40-50 completed kilometers I put myself to the curb: the bladder presses. Thus I see that the first group has settled a bit from the rest of the participants, nor 100-120 driver should comprise the first group. I get no problems (even with the support of Ingo and Matt) back into play. It continues at the pace (the average was at this time is about 35 km / h) towards Cham. The Board found there, we have made, and the drinks should extend to the food hut in the rain. The generated in a roundabout short disorder, go Matthias, Ingo and I at the head of the field: a moment that Ingo now holds with his camera.
In slowly steeper terrain, we stop short at times with some other riders to exit one more time. This time the connection is to the field a bit harder, I let Matt and Ingo initially behind me. A short time later comes back and says Matthias, Ingo has fallen, would have made the connection to the field again. Meanwhile, about 90 km have been completed, the trip takes about 2:40 h. straight time soon would the first big increase, the increase to be achieved Arber. I chat with Matt, who thinks he should be well let rip when it went into the increase. Although we actually a "cozy coffee travel" had planned to come, even at this stage by the competitor in me if I'm the front runners, I can not just switch to drive so cozy. A short time later, the amateur series of VCR on the front four of them, and fasten the pace in the Getting to loose Arber times of about 35 km / h on whopping 45 km / h. One series is now gone, the field takes place in the length, do not go quite clear, with a big group in the increase. After about 10km Tempohatz it goes into the climb to Arber: large front wheel, speed 30,31,32 behind crumbling apart the field in front of me tearing a hole that I create once again moving towards. Front 3 Regensburg (Including Stefan Thaller, Fourth of this year 3 Countries Giro ), Stefan Mistler (in the last 4 years, winning two of the Arber marathons, winner of the GP Schwarzwald in the past two years) and two other drivers who are unknown to me are. I still turn depends, but the pulse pounding 185 beats per minute, so if I go, I would not even reach the target in Regensburg, or only on the gums. So I will tear off, trying to find my own pace. Behind me I can see another rider on him I wait. Together we will quickly but not too fast direction pass. pass short of the pass we are a driver of the 6-lead group. Then there is the short, not too difficult descent to Bayerisch-Eisenstein. On the slightly sloping road, we are haunted by a 5-group again. In Regenhütte I fill my bottles only briefly, would eat now totally wrong: it follows the rise of the hardest marathons Arber, rising to Bretterschachten . In the Board we will be overtaken by a few drivers who miss the food so that I lose track of my placement. The four of us take the increase in attack, a departure from my companion Arber increase means that we depend on two other colleagues. I take the pace of work for both of us go, for short periods at the request of my companion a little slower. Nevertheless, after short time from behind the announcement, I should down. At the top of Bretterschachten I catch up with a driver and myself will come from behind by a rider from Herpersdorf (as identified by its Radklamotten is not hard ;-)) obtained. So we are now a threesome. It is a fast descent to the ground corn.
try on the following slightly downhill miles through regular detachments to keep the tempo high. Appears before us one other driver to which we catch up on a light wave, and he was waiting for us. For is one of the other two riders dropped on the shaft, we are again a trio. On the shirt of the obtained driver I read "The Zyklonauten. That seems somehow familiar .... Exactly, tour forum! Zyklonaut of advice to me is to demand a "mentor Tour" before. The three of it goes into the next short climb, after a few more shorter waves, the increase is up to Kolmberg. That I had as a treacherous and, above all, extremely hot in memory. I should not deceive myself. On top of that take the grand tour here A (250km) and the smaller Tour B (170km) together, which on the one hand has the advantage that it is no longer alone on the track , on the other hand holds but the great disadvantage is that one is dealing with many slow drivers (and riders), where the straight ahead part is quite difficult. More than once it comes to difficult situations, the speed differences on the mountain are partly already striking.
About half of the increase in my crew takes off Herpersdorf the tempo a bit, I can this pace of tightening not follow at first, I fight but approached again, probably encouraged by the fact that he was the pace again takes out a little. Sorry, there is also a piece of Mentor Tour back, calls me a little behind because of doping, which I explain with my Testo cover the night before. I see only in the destination. Somewhere overtake s in this increase, we also have a former top rider of the Regensburg group that had formed at the foot of the Arber. Top of the food is going to hell: we fight and push us forward, we have something of a hurry than most drivers of the 170 round. Quickly fill up the bottles, grab two half bananas and on we go. Somewhere in here we get to Hannah and Basti, which on visual inspection, are also still quite fit, Mark was bent on the 125km round, as I hear in passing of Basti and Hannes.
is followed by a short descent, the climb to Maibrunn level, now appear from time to time my parents on the road and perpetuate my actions in digital form, some even moving pictures, as I find, however, only after . The arrival of my parents, in addition to this potential imaging of this report, a second nice side effect: I can get rid of the vest, arm warmers and gloves, which I am needed at the start because of the coolness and transport up to this point in my jersey pockets had. From the height Maibrunn down first followed by a longer downhill before it readily undulating terrain to the last significant increase in Asha's.
This increase is, my Herpersdorf companion again and again a few yards from me, but then kindly wait for me again and again. Whether this really just the lightweight wheels, is like me trying to explain? We reach the last board in Saulburg: here wanted Matthias, Ingo and I actually drink quite a cool comfortable Kneitinger before it should go to the last 45 km. It is not to get that first, it's food so full that I do without even more water to refuel, and second, would me a beer at this time probably transported to the afterlife. So this board is also omitted, the remaining liquid must somehow reach into my bottles to Regensburg. We get another one of Regensburg former top flight, are thus now almost certainly in the top 10. The last 40 km to go flat through the Danube to Regensburg, fortunately we found a few supporters, so that we manage the pace at 35-40 km / h to keep. My guide, however, fall of detachment to detachment always shorter, much of it is no longer in my legs. Overall, the trip goes according to Regensburg rather unspectacular. On the outskirts of Regensburg, we are on the Cycle path diverted to any red light rigorously forced to stop. In my eyes pretty silly behavior by the police, but what can you do .... It's determined safe speed with 35 to go on a bike trail than on the road. Ultimately, the goal is reached at the fairground in Regensburg.
The achievement of the goal remains rather unspectacular, not a spokesman, announcing the one (as yet happened at La Marmotte), a handful of spectators, just lots of cyclists who come back from the shorter rounds and also achieve the goal. After my finish line I meet Stefan Mistler (this year, second) and learn from him that now maybe 3 or 4, maximum 5 riders in the big group in the goal. So I definitely have a Top 10 place reached my gross travel time (including all forced traffic stop) is at 7:20 h, the net travel time is about 5-6min shorter, unfortunately, my speedometer spins in the target a little rum, so that my days records are deleted . A radio reporter interviewed by Bayerischer Rundfunk and Stefan Mistler me briefly about our impressions of the track. Stupid, I forgot to ask when and where the contribution would be sent to Arber cycling marathon. A short time later, Hannah and Basti reach the target, and they are more than satisfied with their performance. Matt and Ingo take about 40 minutes after me at the finish, they had a cyclist in Saulburg indulged :-) Markus also appears: freshly showered and have already moved. The six of us we get the well deserved food and even a well-earned beer, and they affect the experience a little.
Conclusion: Great weather (after initial fog beautiful sunny, but not as hot as in recent weeks), great circuit protection (escort motorcycles to kilometer 100, then traffic control at each intersection), to the food I can not much to say, I am passed by two of the four consultations. My thanks also to the various people in the target that have given us their drink coupons. Unfortunately we had to drive back by car, otherwise we would have probably got a couple of beers instead of cola ;-)
Arber Bike Marathon 2006, in all respects a pleasant experience!
PS: Many thanks to my father who, I think, fantastic images! I hope I get in the coming days a few pictures of Mark and Ingo, so I can spice up the report images technically still a little bit. Man is finally an animal eye (eh, Mark?).
EDIT: Added pictures of Ingo.
